I bring to the UKYA my distinctive multilingual, applied linguistic perspective which is informed by practice and policy.

Bio

Katherine Young is a Bilingual Research Methods Lecturer at Cardiff Metropolitan University. As an educator, a researcher and a leader, she wants to see evidence-based change being affected at the highest level. She wants to bring problems that disproportionately affect marginalised, under-represented citizens to the fore and to work with others to find appropriate solutions. Her research and teaching have consistently centred on linguistic justice and educational access, particularly for learners navigating bilingual and minoritised language environments. She has taught in socioeconomically disadvantaged schools with the educational charity Teach First, and her passion is for widening access to education, widening access to languages and widening access to where they intersect; i.e. education through the medium of a minoritised language.
At the heart of her academic practice is collaboration. She has worked across disciplines (linguistics, education, psychology), sectors (government, universities, third sector), and geographies (a Wales-Quebec collaborative partnership) to co-produce evidence reviews and impactful research that have directly shaped Welsh Government policy and investment.
