This statement sets out UKYA’s commitment to embedding Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) in all that we do – within the Academy and through our external work. By working to address systemic inequalities, removing barriers to participation and amplifying underrepresented voices, we aim to build a more inclusive Academy and contribute to a fairer, more equitable society.

While many initiatives aim to reduce inequalities, significant differences in experience persist across the UK’s diverse population. These inequalities affect areas such as education, employment and health, and are shaped by characteristics including, but not limited to, race, gender, sexuality, disability and socio-economic background.

These issues do not exist in isolation. Many people experience intersectional inequalities, which are often intensified by wider systems of power and exclusion. Despite growing attention, there is still inconsistency in how EDI is understood, implemented and prioritised across sectors.

The organisational structure and activities of the UK Young Academy aim to demonstrate a proactive approach to promoting and maintaining inclusiveness for its members and the people it engages, in line with the Guiding Principles of Young Academies.

We seek to embed inclusive practices in all aspects of our work and continually reflect on how we can remove barriers to participation, ensuring that all voices are heard and valued.

Applications for membership

The UK Young Academy will do everything it can to promote and encourage diversity during the application process for new members. This includes looking at ways to attract a higher percentage of applications from underrepresented groups and regularly reviewing and revising its promotional materials and processes to ensure that all applicants have an equal chance to succeed.

All selection committee members are given a briefing on unconscious bias in decision-making to address potential biases which can arise when making judgements on membership.

Under-represented groups are particularly encouraged to apply for membership.
