This in-person, two-day workshop is aimed to equip academics who are new to the UK research landscape. Bringing together a broad range of speakers from both the UK and internationally, including members of the Young Academy of Scotland, Young Academy Ireland, and the Global Young Academy. This event will focus on essential skills, insights into career progression, funding opportunities, and key aspects of academic life in the UK. In addition, this workshop will include a mini session on Academic Freedom in collaboration with the Royal Society.
Day 1: Navigating UK Academia
The first day will focus on practical aspects of establishing an academic career in the UK. Sessions will include guidance on CV and cover letter writing, followed by a mock interview clinic featuring a panel of experienced academics from vast array of disciplines. There will be an introduction to the UK academic system, along with discussions on securing grants and fellowships, understanding the Research Excellence Framework, and strategies for academic publishing. The day will conclude with a panel discussion on the experiences and advice of scholars who have successfully navigated the transition into UK academia.
Day 2: Expanding Career and Research Horizons
The second day, organised in collaboration with the Royal Society, will explore career pathways both within and beyond academia. Sessions will cover transferable skills for careers outside the university setting, communication and collaboration strategies, and a panel discussion featuring industry professionals.
The afternoon will feature a mini workshop on Academic Freedom, facilitated by the Royal Society. This session will include interactive discussions on barriers to academic freedom, strategies for overcoming them, and practical guidance on handling online harassment.
The workshop provides a valuable opportunity for new academics to gain a deeper understanding of the UK research environment, develop essential professional skills, and connect with a supportive network of experts across policy, industry and academia.
