Bio

Charith Perera is a Reader (Associate Professor) at Cardiff University. He works on the Internet of Things: networks of everyday devices and sensors that collect and share data. He focuses on building connected systems that are secure, safer, and sustainable. He received a PhD in Computer Science from the Australian National University, Canberra and an MBA from the University of Wales, UK. He founded the Cardiff Internet of Things Group and the Internet of Things Garage, which focus on developing highly distributed sensing systems for a wide range of applications, including environmental monitoring, smart built environments, and healthcare. He was named a GCHQ National Resilience Fellow (2020), a Google Research Scholar (2023) and an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Cooperative Research Programme Fellow (2025). He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He is a School Governor and also works with Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Smart Cities to integrate DEI principles into modern smart city designs.
