Sophie Meekings appointed as new Co-chair of the UK Young Academy Executive Group
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Sophie Meekings as the new Co-chair of the Executive Group of the UK Young Academy.

Sophie Meekings‘ appointment follows a recent internal election process, during which members of the Executive Group were invited to self-nominate. Sophie will formally assume the role at the start of October 2025. She will be succeeding Denis Newman-Griffis, whose term will conclude at that time. We extend our sincere thanks to Denis for their dedicated leadership during their tenure.
Sophie has played an active role in the UK Young Academy since its inception. She brings considerable experience to the position, currently serving as Co-chair of the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Working Group, Co-lead of the THRIVE project, and on the Membership Selection Committee.
Sophie said:
“The UK Young Academy is one of the most rewarding things I’m involved in. I’m honoured and delighted to have the opportunity to facilitate our incredible, talented membership to continue doing what they do best: collaborating across sectors to create meaningful societal change.”
Sophie is a neuroscientist by background, researching speech production in both typical speakers and people with communication disabilities, such as stuttering. Being deaf herself, Sophie brings lived experience to her work. She is currently a Royal Society Dorothy Hodgkin Postdoctoral Fellow, with previous support from the British Academy and Economic and Social Research Council. Outside the lab, she volunteers with a national outdoor education charity.
We look forward to Sophie’s Co-leadership of the Executive Group, alongside Edward Pyzer-Knapp, as the Executive Group continues to shape our strategic direction, strengthen partnerships, and drive progress in key areas for the UK Young Academy.
