Bio

Dr. Wioleta Zelek is a Senior Research Fellow at Cardiff University, specialising in the complement system, a key part of the immune system. After a few years in Pharma, she returned to academia and obtained her PhD in 2020 at Cardiff University, focusing on developing complement blocking drugs for autoimmune diseases. Her research aims to create novel therapies that cross the blood-brain barrier to reduce inflammation in Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Dr. Zelek has received prestigious fellowships from Wellcome Trust, Health and Care Research Wales, and Race Against Dementia Alzheimer’s Research UK. She is also an Emerging Leader at the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), recognising her contributions to understanding inflammatory mechanisms in Alzheimer’s and developing new treatments for dementia.
