Marloes graduated from Eindhoven University of Technology with a degree in Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. For her PhD, Marloes relocated to Hasselt University of Belgium where she was part of the BIOSensors group under Prof Wagner. After finishing her PhD, Marloes continued as a postdoctoral researcher within the same group. In 2014, she began working in the organic chemistry group of Prof Kilburn at Queen Mary University of London. Instead of biomimetic receptors, she focused on enzymes (“natural” receptors) and studying enzyme catalysis with electrochemical methods. Marloes’ independent research started at Manchester Metropolitan University in 2015 where she was later promoted to Senior Lecturer in Chemical Biology in 2018. After moving to Newcastle University in 2019, she attained her professorship in Bioinspired Materials in 2023. In December 2023, Marloes’ group relocated to the Chemical Engineering department of the University of Manchester where she is now a Chair in Engineering Biology. Her research group focuses on developing novel (portable) sensing platforms that can be used to solve complex medical and environmental problems.
